will our security alarm work if the telephone wire is cut?
If I install a security alarm in my house, can't a burglar just cut the wire to my phone outside to disarm it?
It will not disarm the alarm per se, but it will prevent it from calling the monitoring center, this will not, however, prevent the alarm from going off, and those alarms are pretty freaking loud, and unless you live out in the middle of nowhere, the neighbors are sure to hear it, and if the alarm system doesn't have a loudspeaker horn, the buzzers can be enough to have that "nails on a chalkboard" sound to it, try to steal when hearing that
Not to mention, it depends where you live, who built the house, and what the homeowner chooses to do (later on down the road), but while some TNI boxes (Telephone Network Interface) may be outside in a place where it can easily be cut, some houses have the TNI installed in their garages or basements, and the main line is buried until it gets to the pole or or box (that is unless it is brought from a pole to a roof conduit, which isn't the case for most houses), so the person breaking in would have to run to the garage or basement (if they didn't already go through the garage), and cut the phone line while the alarm is going off, and it would be too late anyway, the alarm system would of already called the monitoring center and the police would already be on their way, so the likeliness that somebody would cut the line is rare
