American Beech Trees in Canada- are they fire resistant?
I would like to know about anything interesting about the american beech tree (fagus grandifolia) especially whether they are fire resistant or if their seeds are fire resistant and if their habitat has fire (I'm interested in forest fires) but any other cool things about my favourite tree will be appreciated.
The two statements in the previous answer appear to be conflicting, but they may actually both be correct. Beech is a clonal species, reproducing vegetatively by suckering roots. Consider for our purposes the word "tree" to refer to one trunk and all of its branches above ground, but not the underground portion of the plant, and considering any other truncks to be separate trees even if they are attached underground. The "tree" is indeed highly susceptible to fire, but the plant is likely to remain alive underground and thus able to colonize the area after the fire with an advantage over species that must grow back from seeds.
Beeches are not the only trees that can resprout after fire, and many species, including beech in my experience, vary from one part of their range to another in terms of their ability to resprout after a fire or a timber cut. I suggest asking a forester in your area, Try Environment Canada or the Conservation Data Centre in your province.
