Is it save to travel alone in taipei?
I'll be in taipei for one month. Is it easy and save to travel there? I'm a 20 year old girl and don't know any mandarin
As an American who has lived in Taiwan for 4 years I can tell you that Taiwan is a safe place.
There are some bad people in Taiwan just like anywhere else, but over all Taiwan is 100 times safer than in the US. I don't live in Taipei, I live in Taichung but it is still a large city and I still walk around late at night. The people are friendly, the police are helpful, and as long as you don't get lost there are not too many things to worry about. I know that not being able to speak Mandarin is a hurdle that makes things seem more complicated but there are a lot of Americans in Taipei and a lot of the younger generation speaks English so you shouldn't find it too hard to find someone who speaks or understands enough English to be able to help you.
The worst that I have come across are giant spiders, stray dogs, and idiots who don't pay attention while riding/driving their scooters/cars. So be careful when crossing streets, and ALWAYS beware of the little blue trucks ( http://blog.taiwan-guide.org/wp-content/uploads/little-blue-truck.jpg ) because they will NOT be aware of you.

red lights are often optional. the enforcement has improved in the big cities in recent years but if you go to Changhua you will notice that red lights are not considered worth obeying in the county areas. Its a guideline but not strictly followed by most people.

I am not say that you should wonder around with reckless abandon, but a moderate amount of precaution and you will be fine. If you are going to stay with some friends, then you can ask them to show you around for the first week or two until you get use to the lay of the land, then you can start venturing out on your own. If you are going by your self and will be there alone, then you can do what I told my brother when he visited take some note cards write very general questions on them, like where is the subway, the address to your hotel or place your staying, etc. Seems odd but it helps in a pinch.
